WOW LOL ...... so you felt the best way you could lead an orchestra
was to embarrass someone ...
I've conducted maybe 1500 or more recording sessions with 60 piece
groups to big bands to quartets and I don't think I've ever had the
need to create a great performance by demeaning anyone in the group.
Dear Mr King:
Perhaps you have had the luck of always dealing with a steady, serious
and professional group. It has been the case with me most of the times,
but when things got out of hand, I did have to interfere. In the case of that
particular story, the player could perform but neglected to, thus delaying
the recording of an important rehearsal for a Juilliard recital. 3 times over
and purposely. Since it was an academic affair and I could not fire the
musician, that was the best way at the time I found to redeem the
situation. Perhaps not the best or most perfect way, but the way I found
and with the time I had left to fullfil my job.
No, I have not found that embarassing someone would be the way to lead
an orchestra, neither do I think that way. Your way to generalize it and summ
it as who I am or how I act is rather unfair.
I only acted with more vigor, as I deemed it necessary, and on that particular
situation, although with some collateral dammage, it served the purpose very well.
Mind you also, that without mentioning previously, I believe the main factor for an
orchestra to sound great is indeed the conductor's performance.
An orchestra alone can play a piece, but with all the millenar experience you have,
you probably know by now it would sound pretty dull and somewhat lifeless.
The conductor is the brain, the master and the leader.
Did I mention the leader ?
