There was a nice quote from Steven Speilberg a few years back that the audio folks who participated in a GDC 2006 lecture were fond of quoting. It went something like, "The sound and music is 50 percent of the experience".  Of course Speilberg is more than likely a pretty smart guy.  I suspect most music users probably aren't as clever, though I don't really know anything about the guy.

It always was... but composers seem to think what they 'add' is of  
the greatest importance?

It was and is always.... vision first, sound 2nd.......... yes even  
with the crappiest of movie/tv product.
