Yea that is very true, it is very much a clique that is hard to be in
unless you are exactly that type of person. And even if you do get in,
expect sub-par treatment. I remember playing tons of salsa gigs where
I was the one non latin, and I would get paid usually 20-50% less than
any of the latinos, even someone that all they did was play shaker. If
you do want to give it a go tho, contact me off list and I can try and
give some names. I went to school with some of the Miami Sound Machine
guys and I hung out at some of their studio sessions on their first
album before they got hot as one of their sax players was a good
friend of mine and some of those guys I toured with in Europe. Its
been years since I have been in contact but I can at least tell you
who the players were in the late 80s, probably one or two are still
around ;)

And yea the music scene in Miami has taken massive hits to the art in
the last 15 or so years. The happening spot for salsa was on Calle
Ocho (SW 8th Street in Miami) where there used to be club after club
where they played live salsa till 4am every night. Now 90% of those
clubs are gone or with a DJ

But like anyplace, there is always room for talented people if you
have a good attitude and play your cards well
