[Fmpro] Modern film scores are terrible, say composers

Yes, I agree with you - this is pure H-Y-P-O-C-R-I-C-Y!

But to a certain degree I agree with the view about lots of film scores
being bland, with very little emphasis on the good old melody and true
compositional skills. However: this is really only applicable to BIG
HOLLYWOOD BLOCKBUSTERS in general. As some of you know I run a small
soundtrack label called MovieScore Media (http://www.moviescoremedia.com)
and I discover new, wonderful, interesting, rewarding, exquisite film scores
written for smaller films, basically every week. There IS a lot of fantastic
film scores written, the only problem is that the big studios have really
lost their sense of good taste when it comes to music and they are seldom
interested in taking any chances. And they certainly know who to call in
order to know what they'll get!

> Following up, I have to quote this tidbit in from Wikipedia:
>
> "Born in Frankfurt am Main, Zimmer began his musical career playing
> keyboards and synthesizers with, among others, the bands Helden (with Warren
> Cann from Ultravox) and The Buggles ("Video Killed the Radio Star"). He was
> also a member of the electro-wave band Krisma. In the 1980s, he worked with
> Stanley Myers, a film composer. His breakthrough came in 1988, with the
> score for Rain Man, which was nominated for an Academy Award."
>
> Yet Zimmer complains in the article:
>
> "He said that these days scores were more likely to be written by keyboard
> players with computer skills learned at film schools rather than composers
> trained at music college."
>
> I think that's funny...
