I did hear that (in the early 1990s at least) in Nashville many songwriters
would have to share the copyright of a song placed with the known recording
artist even though the song may have been written years earlier. I heard it
was something like, "son, we really like your new song and (pick your star)
wants to sing it on his/her new CD. But if you want us to do that you have
to make them a co-writer. Take it or leave it."

I don't know if it's true. Can someone in Nashville corroborate this?
