In a well known incident, Dolly Parton turned down Elvis Presley's request to record "I Will Always Love You" because Tom Parker demanded 50 percent of the publishing. Parton NEVER gives away publishing, so she passed. She was quite upset about it at the time because everyone told her she was making a mistake but she stuck with her decision. Whitney Houston later recorded it and Dolly made $6m. Some mistake.
I just saw this recently on a Biography Channel program about Parton. Here is an article about it: http://www.elvis.com.au/presley/news/dolly_parton.shtml
