Thanks to everyone for all the great listening suggestions! My bank account
is paying for it, though. :(

Probably obvious to most everyone on this list, but if not, check out almost
anything by Thomas Newman. American Beauty and Shawshank Redemption are two
classics. A Series of Unfortunate Events is equally brilliant, if not as
ground-breaking. He does use a string section, but it's on the small side
and used very sparsely. Most of his cues are a few solo instruments plus
some electronic stuff. His arrangements, miking techniques and use of
electronics have really pushed the limits of traditional orchestration. His
theme's, while maybe a little too mainstream for some tastes, are very well
crafted and quite beautiful, and his music always serves the film.

Also check out Everything Is Illuminated. I don't remember which of the
music is Paul Cantelon's original score and which is pre-written music that
was dropped in, but it's all wonderful small ensemble stuff and the
musicians play the heck out of it.

Cheers!
Eric
