Marinho & Michael,

Some history behind the Oud. It's Persian & Kurdish in origin. For centuries a double stringed instrument with four notes: modified by Zorab/Ziryab (789-887) who added the fifth string thus influencing the advent of the Vihuela and
eventually the modern guitar in Spain. He also established the first MUSIC Conservatoire in Cordoba and was a master of the Oud or tanbour, Kurdish lute. (Zorab brought eastern dress, food, poetry, hairstyles, music to Cordoba and al Andaluce, Andalucia he was a Kurd who spoke Arabic.)

Ouds/barbats were fretted instruments originally, but lost the frets in the 14th century. The Sask was
invented in Turkey in the 20th century, frets were added and can be moved or fixed depending on the maker etc, somewhat easier to play & tune, someone in Radiohead uses one on a song (mayby)

some tunings:
Syria/Lebanon EAdGC
Egypt GADGC
older tuning DGADGC
Popular tuning CFADGC
Turkish BEADGC
high Lead tuning FADGCF
another GCDGCF
7 string OUD BEADGCF

Origins for the word guitar in Sanskrit "tar" means chord & string, "guit" from "sangeet" meaning music:
Persian/Iranian instruments the Tar, Persian setar, Persian dotar, Indian sitar, Indian ektar.

Inspired by the Oud are some more tunings below:
Renaissance Lute tuned to E-A-d-f#-b-e or just tune G-c-f-a-d-g and capo up to third fret.
Isaac Albeniz, Enrique Granado, Agustin Barrios all used nonstandard tunings on some of their compositions:
D-g-d-g-d-b, also, Davey Graham (Irish) uses D Modal=D-A-d-g-a-d.

see: Peyman Nasehpour, Al Tiffasi (13th Cent), Zorab/Ziryab.
Many of my compositions are linked to alternate tunings and share similar chord forms on the neck.

> From: marinho at manommg.com>> > The Saz is a lot friendlier to guitarists than the Oud, since it's tunning is closer to the > center strings of a guitar and having frets (although not fixed like the guitar frets).> A great instrument indeed. I have been listening to this Iranian guy called Hossein Alizadeh> who is a monster on it. He implements chords along with solos, uses delay and other effects,> a real trip.. He has an album with Duduk Master Djivan Gasparyan called Endless Vision that> was nominated for this year's Grammy's and hasn't left my Ipod favorites in a long time... > I will shoot you guys some links as soon as I get productive here... Out of picking my pennies> to keep up with the bills my soon to be real shopping list is: The Oud, the Saz, a Zurna, two more Duduks > (one in D and another in G) and a Turkish Ney (one meter long reed bamboo flute)>> Marinho Nobre
