John that's awesome info. Thank you indeed.
It's also worth noting that the Oud on it's Arabic and traditional form when modified in Turkey, had all it's frets removed in order to accomodate the performance of the Maqamat (Arabic modal system), since it applies the use of quarter and eight tones throughout.
The Saz also known as Baglama also had it's frets made movable for the same reason or in other
words to accomodate the reach of quarter tones. The Saz is known today in 3 different formats being the "Cura" it's smaller form with a short scale neck, the standard Saz with movable frets and 39 inches long neck and the Long neck Saz with 43 to 49 inches (depending on the maker) also with movable nylon frets. One of the factors that makes the Saz tone so appealing is the actual presence of nylon frets against steel double strings.
I have been playing them both on a loan basis and ocasional night performance jams, but can't wait to get my hands on my own. I am shopping for the Oud first and very likely will buy a piece from a Saudi luthier I've been in touch with. The Saz will come from a store in Turkey called Anatolia, since they are all built on site by their own Turkish luthiers as well...
Last but not least, I just visited your site, you have great music,
extremely tasty and with much variety. Keep it up. The world needs
people like you replacing all the loopers...
