There are some recent examples on that too... Danny Elfman
wrote all the songs and even sang on some at his score for
Tim Burton's Willie Wonka's Chocolate Factory, while Dave
Arnold have partnered up with Chris Cornell on the theme song
for Casino Royale. Phillip Glass had parallels on his entire
career writting for concert, opera and film...
Doing it all that's music, good music for that matter...

I'd tend to agree, Adrian. Igor Stravinski was a composer;
Irving Berlin was a songwriter. Very different skill sets.
However, once in a great while, we get a George Gershwin,
or a Henry Mancini-- masters of both idioms. Of course,
Gershwin and Mancini each collaborated with lyricists.
Doing it all? That's Stephen Sondheim territory. Very,
very rare.
Thank goodness there's lots of ways to skin a cat!
