I love Appassionata Strings -- they were my next purchase after Special
Edition and are a good compliment. They are samples of a bigger string
section and have more articulations included. However, if you're having
trouble getting the sound you're looking for from Special Edition, I don't
think Appassionata Strings will help. Each section is miked in stereo in a
dry room, but everything is placed in the center of the stereo spectrum, so
you've got the do the panning and add reverb. Based on the information
you've given, I can only guess as to what problems you're having, but my
suspicion is you'll run into the same problems with AS that you had with SE.
Do you have a high quality reverb plugin? Have you watched the "Special
Edition Demo" video tutorial on VSL's site? It has step by step
instructions on how to set your panning and f/x sends and reverbs to make a
realistic orchestra simulation.
Also, I'm pretty sure you can buy a replacement dongle for SE for not too
much money.
Hope this helps,
Eric
