It's called Direct Licensing and is specifically allowed for in the AFJ2
Agreement ASCAP has with the DOJ. And it seems to scare the hell out of the
PROs, despite the fact we've been told that Marilyn Bergman herself has
direct licensed music for cable TV. Hmm.....
It doesn't surprise me that they won't talk about this - same way they are
reluctant to let members know they can resign from ASCAP for the rest of the
world and choose a Euro PRO to collect non-USA royalties for them that can
provide a pension and 66% writer split on some Euro performances (unlike the
50/50 split enforced by ASCAP).
Same way they refuse to disclose how many millions of dollars are drained
from the royalties to be paid for local and cable TV in order to further
enrich network TV writers, already paid at the highest rates.
Same way they refuse to disclose which board members even show up for board
meetings (attendance records secret... Why do you suppose they would insist
on that?)
Etc etc etc
This is an organization built on secrecy and keeping members in the dark
about many aspects about how their royalty dollars are collected and spent.
